Our Work
As an affiliate dojo of the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU), we follow the mission statement of the organization, which encourages us “to preserve and disseminate the teachings and principles of Aikido, as transmitted by the Founder Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei to his direct disciple Mitsugi Saotome Shihan.”
Saotome Shihan has said, “Aikido training is to challenge yourself, not the other. You will develop confidence by facing your fears, and negative fighting spirit will become creative fighting spirit.” (ASU Student Handbook)
Our physical practice therefore focuses on the application of aiki principles to the daily relationships of family, friends, community, and work/school environments.
Basic Movements
On the mat, we encourage students to breathe and focus on relaxed, centered movement in relationship with their training partners. Cooperation is fostered between uke and nage in their roles and relationship. In our children’s classes we put a focus on calm warm-ups, safe exercises, and cooperative movement games to reinforce these principles
In the community, we have reached out to organizations such as Rotary International, local schools, and health care facilities to explore the application of aiki principles while building peaceful relationships. In our community, we have also sponsored workshops on aiki applications in daily life. These sessions have been led by internationally recognized aikido practitioners.
Masagatu, agatsu. True victory is victory over self…. We train to achieve this victory in the moment by maintaining balance and verticality when confronted by an attack, whether it is physical or verbal.
